"featured content" from resource database currently only featuring latest resources, not working in subcategories

In our resource database we have a couple of items featured from various subcategories.
Right now it is so that ONLY the latest 6 resources are featured, AND this does not change per subcategory.
Every subcategory will ONLY show the latest 6 resources, indepenent if these 6 resources belong to this subcategory or not, even if there are valid entries in this subcategory.
I do not think this is currently working as intended, no?
